Alión 2020 Magnum 1,5L

Alión is made from the Tinto Fino grape variety. The grapes are harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes and immediately taken to the winery to be put on the sorting tables. Fermentations are carried out in temperature-controlled wooden vats until a good polyphenolic extraction is obtained, which will provide the generous colour and firm structure that are part of the personality of this wine. Finally, the wine is aged in wood and cement for between 12 and 14 months, depending on the characteristics of the vintage, entirely in new French oak Bordeaux barrels. These barrels from the most prestigious Bordeaux firms represent an important investment in oak because, vintage after vintage, all the wine produced at Alión will remain in new barrels which, after being abandoned for bottling, will not be used again by the winery.

Once the wine is removed from the barrels, it will remain no less than 15 months in the stillness of the bottle, where it will finish assembling all the primary aromas of the fruit with the nuances provided by its delicate ageing, resulting in a fleshy, complex and intense wine, but in which elegance plays as a differentiating element and hallmark of the winery's identity.

ABOUT THE VINTAGE:

Alión is made from a careful selection of terroirs from the best areas of the Ribera del Duero appellation. These soils, which complement each other, together with the same viticulture that is done at Vega Sicilia, have resulted in wines with a firm structure.

2020 was a drier than normal vintage, until the grapes were harvested. In September there was heavy rainfall, which is what characterised this vintage. The grapes were very healthy, but the effect of these rains was to dilute them. To harvest, we had to wait for the grapes to concentrate again, but the result was wines with more balance, more freshness and more vertical. This was the vintage where we were able to extract more as the skins were very polymerised and where we were able to give a little more weight to the American oak by adding 4%. The cement helped us to work on the verticality and freshness of the wines.

2020 was a complicated vintage due to the Covid management but it gave delicate, deep, spicy wines. It is a very elegant and subtle Alión.
