Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres 2019 75 cl.
Alma CarraovejasBodegas Pago de Carraovejas elaborates this old red wine in the D.O. Ribera del Duero (España) with tempranillo grapes.
Description
Cuesta de las Liebres 2019 confirms the unique identity of this steep slope and the extreme viticulture that takes place here. A vineyard of fine red guided in vertical goblet, tucked in the pine forest and scrubland. 3.36 hectares planted in 1993 that extract the essence of the nutrient-poor soils of this plot in the Carraovejas valley. The slope provides equal sun exposure for all the vines. The cradle of an exciting grape. The exact interpretation of an extraordinary origin. Produced only in exceptional vintages. The expression of a precise and pure vineyard. A radical wine, from the roots. Powerful and very persistent. An authentic wine.
HARVEST
The 2019 vintage was characterized by a cool winter with little rainfall. Thanks to the abundant rainfall in 2018, the vineyard retained a water reserve that produced a perfect development throughout the vine cycle. Budbreak and flowering developed in a balanced manner for each of the estate's varieties. Veraison and ripening began around mid-August and the berries grew very uniformly. The harvest began on September 18, when the earliest variety, Merlot, was harvested, followed by Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, which were harvested on October 5.
VINEYARDS
The Cuesta de las Liebres vineyard sits on a steep slope with a rich biodiversity. The vines, planted in vertical vines, border on the upper part with a pine forest in which various native species of flora and fauna coexist. The whitish calcareous salts are found in a terroir of limestone marl. The slope, which is in the highest part of the valley, exceeds 30% slope in some sections. This slope, together with the unique training system, allows all the vines to be equally exposed to the sun. A unique vineyard planted in 1993. The result of the obstinacy of extreme viticulture.
WINEMAKING
The Cuesta de las Liebres grapes were harvested by hand after exhaustive monitoring during their ripening cycle. The grapes were sorted in the vineyard and transported in small boxes to the winery, where they went through a cold chamber and double sorting table: first by cluster and then by berry. The must was moved by gravity in small vats. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were carried out spontaneously in small wooden vats to mark the personality of the terroir. The wine was aged for 24 months in new 225-liter French oak barrels of extra fine grain. For added protection, the wine contains sulfites. The 2019 vintage was bottled in the spring of 2022.
